For some, there is only one look, one style, one feeling that successfully captures the heart of their home. That is Early American; more specifically, Early American with Milk Paint. Where did this come from? Somewhere around the summer of '95, we expanded our finish choices as more and more requests came in for "Can you do this?" "This" was (deep breath now) Genuine Old Fashioned Home-Made Milk Paint. (whew!) So what is it, and how is it done? Milk Paint is a pigmented powder made from natural materials; milk protein, lime, earth pigments, and clay fillers. The formula dates back to ancient Egypt, and up until the 1800's, was not commercially available. (You made your own!) Sixteen base colors as seen on this color swatch chart serve as a starting point, and variations can be achieved easily. We start by hand mixing the powder with water to get the desired consistency. Grabbing a brush, we start painting each individual piece. To do the job right, we paint before the door is assembled! We paint the completed panel, and brush the inside edges of the stiles and rails that make up the frame of each door. The reason for this is to prevent tear lines in the finish that can occur between panel and frame due to natural wood movement that occurs with seasonal changes. After the paint has dried, it gets a double coat of our satin finish clearcoat, yielding a marriage of old beauty and new durability. Where is the style appropriate? Anyhere you like! The look is a very country, very comfortable style that seems to beckon to you, making it easy to sit down and relax. (Listen closely... Hear that? "Take your shoes off. Can I get you a cup of coffee?")
